Class and Privilege in Epic Fantasy

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

What assumptions do writers (and readers) make about class and privilege in epic fantasy? Things like ‘everyone has a horse’ or ‘all the soldiers have armor’ or ‘the beggar has a sword’ or ‘the farmer is permitted to leave his land’ all carry assumptions that might not have held true back in the day. How can you write/read more accurate epic fantasy and still tell a stirring tale? (Hint: Steal the horses.)
