Do Female Characters Come With an Expiration Date?

Are readers only interested in female characters who are between 16 and 36 years old? Why are so many fictional worlds apparently devoid of children, mothers, grandmothers, aunts, cousins and other women not in the ‘love interest’ age bracket? How do you create characters that show a more realistic range of ages and weave them into the story?
