Alternate history and Steampunk tend to favor the 1800s with airships and fantastic contraptions. But how do you write about that era while acknowledging its ugly truths like colonialism, racism, misogyny, slavery, indentured servitude and genocide? Can you tell a fun story while not ignoring or downplaying the realities of the past?
